Take your favorite quilt blocks on the journey of innovation in this design workshop. Working within the design parameter of using a traditional block innovatively, enjoy being part of a group exploration of looking at blocks in different ways. Experience creativity exercises such as brainstorming and image/block juxtapositioning. Original pattern drawing and curved machine piecing will be taught in class. However, the ultimate techniques used to create individual works will be chosen by the participants.

This workshop explores creating pictorial quilt imagery that is surreal or could not exist in reality because of the use of scale or choice of subjects. Emphasis will be given to creating art quilts that are rich in both concept and visual appeal. Experience creativity exercises such as brainstorming and the pairing up of two unexpected or contrasting images. Original pattern drawing and curved machine piecing will be taught in class. However, the utimate techniques used to create individual works will be chosen by the participants.

1-2 Days
The design parameter for this workshop is to use one traditional quilt block as the format for an art quilt and then adding imagery that fits both structurally and conceptually. By either adding images with applique or embedding them into piecing a beautiful juxtaposition of block and image is achieved. Curved piecing and machine topstitched applique are the techniques covered in class.

1 Day
Sometimes images are more interesting or abstract when shown only partially or cropped. In this workshop, we will practice cropping photo prints to achieve the desired effect for a small quilt design. By cropping, tracing and projecting the selected image onto our design surface, we transform a photo into a quilt pattern. Various methods of image construction will be covered in class including curved machine piecing and machine topstitched applique.

2 Day
Collaborate with a piecer or applique artist from the past. Vintage quilt tops and stacks of old blocks may be waiting to be discovered in your attic or local antique and thrift shops. Find out how fun it is to take something old and make it new. In this workshop we will design illustrations for vintage pieces that honor their beginnings but also enhance them to make them contemporary pieces of art. Various methods of image construction will be covered in class including curved machine piecing and machine topstitched applique.
