JANET FOGG
From a life long love of sewing and a career in art direction, I have combined my two creative passions and immersed myself into the world of innovative quilt art. Deeply rooted in traditional design, my body of quilt art displays the many ways that traditional quilt blocks can be used innovatively. Over the past few years I have developed a lecture mapping my journey through quilt making and a workshop titled Innovative Traditionals which explores creative thinking skills for quilt makers. I have made many award winning quilts and my success in the competitive quilt arena is paralleled with the satisfaction and reward of helping other quilters achieve their goals. Innovative Traditionals
This workshop is geared for all individuals whether they are beginning or advanced students of quilt making. Innovative Traditionals is not a technique class. It is an idea generation class. My years spent as an art director, one who is required to be creative on demand have had a huge effect on the way I approach making quilts. Let me share with you some of the creative skills I have carried with me from my background as a graphic designer into the world of quilt art design. Come prepared to take your favorite traditional quilt blocks on the journey of innovation. By setting a design parameter of using traditional quilt blocks innovatively, we will explore as a group the many ways a quilt can be both traditional and innovative at the same time. The first day involves visualization and group brainstorming sessions geared to move the design process along. I show slides of my quilts and discuss how they were conceptualized. Later that day I begin working one on one with each student to help formulate a design plan for their own projects. Most of my students enjoy observing and participating at this stage because the best ideas happen collaboratively and the repetition of the problem solving sessions reinforces the new thinking skills being taught. While this is not a technique class, I do cover the basics of curved machine piecing. Those who have not done this type of piecing before find it helpful in rendering their designs in fabric and more experienced piecers enjoy an alternate method. Ultimately though, the techniques used in making quilts for this workshop will be chosen by the individuals. After getting everyone started on a path, the remainder of time in the workshop is spent drawing, sewing and enjoying as a group the wide variety of projects in progress.
